Russell Brand gets political at MTV Awards

Russell Brand last night attempted to export his particular brand of comedy to America via the MTV Video Music Awards. And the former GQ Most Stylish Man Of The Year, who landed the gig after being seen doing stand-up in LA, didn’t shy away from the big issues in his highest-profile public appearance Stateside to date. "As a representative of the global community, a visitor from abroad, I don't want to come across a little bit biased, but could I please ask of you, people of America, please elect Barack Obama, please, on behalf of the world," Brand implored the somewhat bemused audience. "Some people, I think they're called racists, say America is not ready for a black president,” continued Brand. "But I know America to be a forward-thinking country because otherwise why would you have let that retarded cowboy fella be president for eight years?” Brand was also forced to retract his mockery of squeaky-clean pop singers the Jonas Brothers, who wear promise rings as a sign of their still-intact virginity: “I've got to say sorry because I said them things about promise rings… It’s just that, you know, a bit of sex occasionally never hurt anybody.”
